“Ai You Reborn Project”
——Medical Nursing Project for Orphaned Child Patients

According to China Children Welfare Policy Report 2011, the number of orphans among China’s vulnerable children increased from 574,000 in 2005 to 712,000 in 2010, up by approximately 24% over five years.More than 80% of these orphans suffered from serious congenital diseases. Most of them were in serious conditioned and needed timely treatment, specialized nursing and rehabilitation training. In recent years, China has increased its input into child welfare institutions and social welfare institutions. Supported by the Ministry of Civil Affairs’ Blue Sky Program, welfare institutions in various localities have improved their infrastructure. In addition, government departments and civil affairs departments at all levels have continuously raised the rearing and living standards for orphans. Thanks to the Tomorrow Program for sick orphans, there has been a marked improvement of the living conditions for sick and disabled orphans in China. However, due to relatively low levels of medical care in remote regions, tight operating funding and staffing quotas at welfare centers and other factors, some orphans suffering from dread diseases in certain regions still cannot receive the best medical assistance in time. Some of the orphans who have received medical assistance lack specialized preoperative and postoperative nursing. There is a shortage ofspecialized nursing for premature infants and physically weak orphans who are newly admitted into hospital. Children who suffer from cerebral palsy and other congenital disabilities cannot be cured through surgery and are in urgent need of high-level medical rehabilitation. In September 2011, Ai You Foundation launched “Ai You Reborn Project”——Medical Nursing Project for Orphaned Child Patients. By setting up independent and embedded nursing centers, the Project aims to provide special rearing and specialized preoperative and postoperative recuperation and nursing to sick orphans in urgent need of assistance, save their lives, and help them to get a fresh start and have a bright futures.

Over the last 4 years since its launch, the project has developed rehabilitation centers in 15 provinces, cities and municipalities in China, effectively solving the commonly existing short-handed problems, also known as “Last Spoon’ gap”, in welfare nstitutions and greatly increasing special nursing level for orphaned and poor children. As of Dec. 31, 2014, the Ai You Newborn Nursing Center has nursed 3,027 applicants, and 2,458 of these newborns had finished their nursing period and gotten a fresh start in the centers.
